For the live show Mora, I was asked by the MX Gallery to light paint the characters just before they went on stage. The challenge I had was to work quickly, each individual session was only between 5 and 10 minutes. Usually I take three hours to light paint. I said yes to the project and went with the challenge. To save time, I ask my friend Jean Marc Abela to operate the cameras. The other thing I did to simplify, was to minimise my choices of light tool on that day. By doing so, it pushed my creativity up and made it more efficient to choose combinations of lights on the spot. One of the characters of the show was played by Diane Dufresne, an icon in the Quebec artistic culture, fortunately I had the pleasure to light paint her. She is the first character in the slide show…. Click to enlarge the images. MORA on Wikipedia: On November 3rd 2011, Dominic Besner and his agents presented an event-exhibition that took place at the Côte des Neiges Armoury in Montreal. The title of this event MORA, is also the title of a novella written by the artist that links together all of the places, people and [...]

Link to the Youtube version: http://youtu.be/nl8diNojT70 This is a collaborative multimedia fashion shoot. It started as a fashion shoot between make up artist Nathalie Dodon and I. We were supposed to do what we call a test shoot. The idea was to do a commercial version of light painting for a fashion client my agency and I wanted to get. As the team was building up, Christian Pomerleau (VJ Gridspace) joined us to do projection while I did light painting. We ended up about 12 people working on this project, experimenting with photo + video light painting while Noé from Para Films was shooting behind the scene for the “making of”. Later Romain (Cayce) created an original track for this piece and Sindre joined to do the motion design. On the day of the shoot a funny thing happened, I was short of one person to help out with the camera. To everyone’s surprise, someone knocked at the door, it was a young photographer, she was looking for work as an assistant. I told her to come in right away and to start now. Thank you Émilie for showing up on that day, it was a big help. One thing became [...]

I used my skills as a light painter to work on the idea of a light sculpture. I almost want to say a kinetic light sculpture because of the look and the feeling it gives, but in reality these are all movements done by hand in a studio on a black background with the new light tools Sylvain Lavoie and I built. We shot video and photography simultaneously. The target size was 1920×560. Since I didn’t have enough cameras for the shoot, I needed two more, I shot left side and right side separately. While I was shooting, used my imagination and intuition to connect both sides of the lights in the frames. Later when editing, I “glued” the right and the left together in After Effects. It took a month of R&D and a lot of testing to get to this final edit, to this simplicity. During these weeks of edit, I was searching for the essence of the piece staying truthful to the vision and to the shooting. I took out everything that didn’t belong in, like a sculptor who carves away every little piece to unravel the purest form. Later while I finished rendering all the effects, [...]

This is a new series I started in 2010. For about 7 years, in the back of my mind, I’ve been searching for the idea, the style, the essence, the direction. Last year after building new tools, I realised they were perfect for the Naked Light Painting series. The idea is to create a world where you can see, feel and imagine the essence of sexuality and eroticism, to bring beauty into to it, to redirect it into the feeling rather than the look of sensuality and to have the light show as much as it’s hiding the subject leaving lots of space for your own interpretation. Eroticism and sexuality has a very important role in our lives and now it’s time to give it back its grace, its depth and its beauty. This is just a small sample, eventually more will be published…. Featured in the PBS light painting interview: http://www.patrickrochon.com/archives/878

This was a new kind of job. The guys at Geodezik asked me to make a shoot for the live visuals on the Michael Buble tour. It’s inspired by the painting of Tamara de Lempicka. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamara_de_Lempicka For this shoot I used Photoshop to create the blurs and to heighten the contrast so I can get the mood we were looking for. Usually on my sessions, do minor retouching, like dodge and burn, brightness and contrast and fixing a few pixels. This was the first time I used Photoshop to do bigger transformations. So I asked my friend Anita Bombita to do the make up, styling and look for a model. She asked her friend Asa who is a professional performer for Cirque du Soleil. Even if we only shoot for 3 hours, many good images came out of it.
